The year is 1982 and I’m cruising through the streets of Istanbul on foot. What a place! Istanbul, once known as Constantinople, straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. Its current population is 14 million (2017). A sign ahead catches my eye. It’s written in English and says, “Tourists welcome food and drink.”

The year was 1990 and I was on my way to Machu Picchu, Peru, perceived by world explorers, dreamers and idealists as a sort of mystical fantasia or spiritual recluse. My story begins in 1982. I was working at a health food store and had just married Anna, my first wife. After a wonderful RV honeymoon on the rugged Oregon coastline, we returned home to find dozens of unopened wedding gifts on the front room floor of our small basement suite in Burnaby.
That night we went out for sushi. During our conversation Anna fired a gun at my head at point blank range.

It was winter in Ontario. The year was 1998. I was on a national tour lecturing across Canada. One night Tracy, Ruby and I decided to visit world famous Horseshoe Falls. Niagara Falls is actually a collective name for three waterfalls that straddle the border between New York State and Ontario.

When I first arrived in Fiji I was immediately greeted with a bowl of Kava and a loud joyous greeting of Bula Bula! In Israel they say Shalom. In Hawaii it's Aloha. But in Fiji it's Bula Bula! Bula originates from the Fijian culture and means anything from hello, goodbye, welcome, love and more. It means LIFE. A blessing of health and happiness.

In 1976 I worked in a meat plant to supplement my college tuition. During a lunch break I heard one of the butchers talking about his recent trip to Hawaii. He beamed with energy and was smiling from ear to ear. I noticed how healthy and happy he looked.
“So what’s it like there?” I inquired.
