Happy New You!

Diamond in the rough. We all face issues of time management at some point or another, but as more and more people deal with working at one or more jobs, fighting long commutes, managing a household and attending school or other training the days, the days often seem to last long into the night.

Then there's raising children, responding to increasing work and time pressures of the workplace, tending to the needs of our life partners and dealing with aging parents. Just the thought of keeping fit and staying healthy seems little more than just that.

But it’s a New Year and time for you to shine. New Year, new you! Can you think of a more perfect time to commence positive personal changes for yourself? Rather than trying to change those around you, develop a closer relationship with yourself. Think of your life a brilliant cut diamond, a diamond with exceptional brilliance and numerous facets. A diamond in the shape of a cone designed to glitter and reflect light from each facet.

Are you getting maximum return for your time and efforts? Or are you a diamond in the rough. This phrase is clearly a metaphor for the original unpolished state of diamond gemstones, especially those that have the potential to become high quality jewels.

Let’s face it; each of us is looking for balance in our life. Balance is something we all need to be well. If any facet of your life is not polished, not uniform, not in “balance”, then it’s just a matter of time before negative symptoms appear. Ultimately this affects the wellness of our entire being, as the whole of our being consists of many parts.

If you adopt some of these suggestions a true metamorphosis will occur and your life will light up like a brilliant cut diamond. But remember, these things take time.

EMOTIONAL

Grief, anger, guilt or resentment can be a heavy load to bear. Professional therapy helps. A religious teacher, Reiki Master or a psychologist (to mention a few) can help to resolve deep-seated issues and lighten your load. Even a good cry with a dear friend can do the trick. Reach out and recognize that we all need help and support even if it means being vulnerable. Don’t try to bear the pain alone. Trust the process.

SEXUAL

A healthy sex life is a natural function of our species and not just for the young. Being sexually active with a loving partner could and should be a satisfying and joyous experience. There are many reasons why we can become sexually dysfunctional. It’s important to communicate with your partner to ignite the desire. It’s your right.

SOCIAL

Friendships need to be nurtured. Make a quick call to say hello or a write a short email to let your friends know they’re in your thoughts. Make a commitment on the calendar to get together as a group at least once a month to celebrate a special event or a have a pot-luck dinner. This will create lifelong bonds, provide a sense of belonging and increase your sense of personal fulfillment.

MENTAL

Stimulate your mind and educate yourself. Take a night course, or just pick up a book or magazine and read a paragraph, page or chapter every day. This daily habit can improve your knowledge, memory and general awareness. Reading will also expand your vocabulary and motivate you in many ways. Audio books are very popular today, you can listen and learn while you drive, train, walk, run or cook. Keep a dictionary handy.

PHYSICAL

Considering a more active lifestyle? Start by trying these energy-building tips. Avoid flour products such as bread, bagels, buns, muffins and pastas. Drink at least two liters of filtered water per day, visit a health food store and begin a good vitamin program. It’s that simple.

METAPHYSICAL

We’re all born with intuition, but we live in a culture that teaches us to look outside of ourselves. Pay attention to the deep wisdom of intuition. Ask the question and trust that the answer lies within. Listen for the response and have the courage to accept and act upon what you hear. Don’t allow self-doubt or fear to override your true inner feelings.

SPIRITUAL

Spirit is the life force, the breath and the soul. It is what we see when we look into someone’s eyes. Lift your spirits this year. Do some homework. Look back and see what’s been missing in your life. What is your heart’s desire, your passion, your purpose? Be honest. Take that class or change your profession. Only you have the power to create your own happiness.

FINANCIAL

Keeping up with the Jones’ is a game you are guaranteed to lose. Don’t compare yourself to others and seek approval from only one person. Yourself! Credit cards, overdrafts, don’t pay till next year and dining out…forget it! Strive to live within your means and not the opposite. Change your attitude about money and don’t associate not spending it with deprivation. Instead, think of this process as a positive choice you’ve made to create abundance. Financial wellness is a state of mind. Start today.
